Ronald Howard Metchis

Born September 13, 1948, in Detroit Michigan to Charles “Chuck” Metchis and Celia “Sippy” Gorman Metchis. Died April 10th, 2025, peacefully in his sleep in Simi Valley California. Survivors include his loving wife Patricia Lynn Johnson Metchis, son Keith Charles Metchis and his wife Kristin and grandchildren Ryan and Emily; and son David Blake Metchis and his wife Valerie and granddaughters Reagan and Kennedy; brother Steven Geoffrey Metchis and his wife Roslyn; sister Karen Metchis. Ron was tragically predeceased by their precious son Zachary Ronald Metchis who died at age 10 from childhood leukemia, and his parents Charles and Celia. Ron passed in the night peacefully, at the age of 76 years young, just one week shy of his 49th wedding anniversary with Patty.

Ron was raised in Phoenix, Arizona and began his college education at Arizona State University. He interrupted his higher education to enlist in the Air Force to avoid being drafted. He was stationed in the Philippines, which he loved, and gravitated towards electronics. The Air Force returned Ron to the states and transferred to Edwards Air Force Base in California, awaiting his discharge. After discharge, Ron returned to college at Cal State University Northridge where he earned his Electrical Engineering degree.

About the same time as his discharge Ron met the love of his life, Patty, on a blind date set up by two mutual friends. He revealed later, that when they met he thought ‘this is the girl I’m going to marry’. Two years later, Ron and Patty married and moved to Simi Valley where they raised their family. He loved his family so much; particularly traveling to the wine country with Patty, helping his sons as they grew into two wonderful men, babysitting his grandchildren including being the home teacher during covid, being a handyman in his home and in Keith’s and David’s homes, going to the beach with his dogs.

Ron was a kind man. Thoughtful in every respect. Despite his own childhood struggles and a tumultuous childhood relationship with his youngest sibling, Ron always extended a hand of friendship willing to help and a hug at every turn. In many ways, he took after his dad in his desire to keep his family close. After Charles passed away, Ron became the anchor to the extended Metchis family.

Besides taking joy in his family, he had many interests. Ron was an avid meteorite collector and created a meteorite learning module for the local grade schools. He loved long bike rides, jogging, karate, weekly meet ups with buddies at The Golden Nugget, and watching Judge Judy and Star Trek over and over! He also had a dry sense of humor and even Patty wondered if he was serious or not. One time he walked into the living room wearing a pair of shorts he found in his drawer. He said, “I don’t know where I got these, I haven’t seen them before, but they fit”. Patty looked at him and said, ‘Ron you have them on inside out’. ‘Oh’ he replied and went back to fix them.

Ron’s absence will be deeply missed, but his legacy will endure in the lives he touched.
