Roslyn Edith Weisman
3 de mayo de 1940 - 30 de julio de 2024
3 de mayo de 1940 - 30 de julio de 2024
Roslyn Edith Weisman passed away at the age of 84 on July 30th, 2024, surrounded by her loving family. Born and raised in Pittsburgh, she was the second eldest of Leon and Pauline Loibman’s four children. She graduated from Taylor Allderdice High School in 1958 and received her RN degree in 1962 from Montefiore Hospital School of Nursing in Pittsburgh. She met her husband, Sanford (Sandy) Weisman in 1962 through a friend while she was already engaged to someone else. Despite having only known Sandy a few months, Roz decided that life would be much more interesting with him than with her fiancé. Three months after meeting, they eloped. Making their way across the country for Sandy’s new job, they stopped in Baltimore on January 24th to marry. They continued on to Los Angeles and stayed. Last January, Roz and Sandy celebrated their 61st wedding anniversary.
Roz and Sandy loved traveling abroad, and often visited places others didn’t travel to at the time, notably Russia and China in the 1980’s. Roz was also an avid theatre goer who saw almost everything playing at the Odyssey, Geffen and Ahmanson theatres while digging up any off-off-off Broadway shows as well. She “dragged” her children along often, instilling a life-long love of theatre in them. She was also an avid museum goer, and made a point of taking her children and grandchildren early and often.
Notably, Roz was always quick with a hug, a kiss and a witticism. She was beloved for both her natural warmth and her inimitable sense of humor. She was also beloved for bringing upbeat energy everywhere she went, even in the hospital - as both a nurse and a patient. Her liveliness and vitality were often reflected in her colorful, conversation-worthy jewelry, which she collected over decades and wore every day.
Roz loved socializing in any capacity and was usually the last one to leave a gathering. In her last years, months and weeks, her family was convinced that she defied all medical prognoses because she just didn’t want to miss out on anything her friends and family were doing.
She loved spending time with her grandchildren. When her first two were born, she spent half her time flying between LA and Michigan, so she didn’t miss out on any of their milestones. When she was well enough, she was happy to hop on a plane anytime to New York or Minnesota to see her younger grandchildren. Perhaps her favorite family time was hosting everyone for a Passover Seder, which was always less about the seder and more about cooking for her family.
Roz was a true believer in “the more the merrier”. For any holiday meal she zealously invited anyone who didn’t have a place to go, even if she didn’t know them well - and would always find a place for everyone to sit. An over-crowded dining table was one of her happy places.
In addition to her family, Roz adored her many friends - and her many friends adored her. She had friends of all ages and from diverse parts of her life. Theatre, exhibits, mahjong, luncheons and celebrations of any sort – these were among her favorite ways of spending time with her friends.
Roz also engaged in the Jewish community. In 1979, at age 39, she became an adult Bat Mitzvah. In 1987 she spent a month working on a kibbutz in Israel. She was also a long-time, active member of the University Synagogue Sisterhood, where she met many of her closest friends. In 2013 she was voted the Synagogue’s “Woman of the Year”.
Roz is survived by her husband, Sandy, daughters Michelle Wood (Brian) and Jill Pflaum (Jason) and her six grandchildren: Emily, Trevor (Eri), Pippa (18), Ainsley (17), Antonia (15) and Josset (13). She is also survived by her sister, her younger brother, two nieces and three nephews. She is predeceased by her younger brother, Irwin Loibman.
Roz will be buried by her immediate family in a plot she chose at Mt. Sinai. There will be a lively celebration of her life in the fall. Details forthcoming. In lieu of flowers, Roz would have loved donations made to The Multiple Myeloma Research Foundation (MMRF) https://themmrf.org/?campaign=470475
