Souvenirs

Dave Jackson wanted to help other people better their lives. From the thousands of school students he knew by name, to the hundreds of teachers and staff members he worked with throughout his long career, connecting with them individually and understanding how he could help them in any way drove his passion as a lifelong educator.  Dave started as a coach and a teacher, winning awards and players' hearts in volleyball, softball, and baseball. He worked his way up to assistant principal at Burroughs High School before being named as the principal at Royal High School in Simi Valley. While he initially “retired” for the first time in 1994, much like the Godfather every time he thought he was out they pulled him back in. His future after retirement included stints as principal of Calabasas High School (winning the national blue ribbon award), Malibu High School, Beverly Hills High School, and a series of guest starring roles in district administration at various districts, after each of which he again “retired”.

Dave’s love and enthusiasm for helping people was undeniable and contagious and was only secondary to his love for his family. Dave is survived by his loving wife of 50 years, Karen, two sons Stephen and Greg, beloved daughter-in-law Annie, and the two greatest joys of his life, his grandsons Charlie and Max.

In lieu of flowers or gift baskets, the family asks that if you feel compelled, please donate to Dave’s favorite charity Shelters for Israel (https://sheltersforisrael.com/shelters-donate/) of which he was a long time co-president or Temple Ramat Zion (https://www.trz.org/donate) where he was a 40+ year member.

In addition to the in-person ceremony, there will be a live stream for those unable to attend. (10/19 at 2:15pm pst)

Dave Jackson was the principal of Royal High School when I attended and while my father, Keith Barker, was a math teacher. My father typically did not like the principals, but he thought Mr. Jackson was the best. And he was! He was dedicated to the students and staff of Royal High School. I always saw him smiling, and supporting the sports and extracurricular events at Royal. My condolences to the family..,we will never forget you Mr. Jackson!! Christy Class of 1993.

Dear Karen, Our deepest condolences to you and your family on David's passing. I knew David when we were in our late teens, when I spent 6 months in California and we stayed in touch after I left and moved to Canada. Our last meeting 3 years ago when Peter and I joined you both for lunch in Los Angeles was very special and I am so grateful that we managed to have such a lovely afternoon and share special memories. May you find peace in the many years you spent together and may his memory be a blessing. Love Vivien and Peter Rethazy

Today I’m remembering my friend Dave, who has been part of my life for 63 years. Few people are lucky enough to have a friendship that lasts a lifetime. Dave brought laughter, steadiness, and heart to everyone who knew him. I will miss him more than words can say, and I’ll carry his memory with deep gratitude. Rest In Peace, Dave!

The world is a better place because DAVID was in it. He defined what it was to be a MENSCH. I am honored to have known him for 18 years and I am saddened that I won't be able to hear his thoughtful and caring views on so many subjects...from family, sports, education, housing, investing, and most anything. Rest in peace my friend.

Dave was such a breath of fresh air with his kindness and integrity. During my time searching for housing in LA-as someone who isn't from here and was beginning to feel hopeless with finding a decent, affordable place to live-Dave treated me like a human being, and was always incredibly kind every time I needed anything. He really did treat his tenants as if they were family, which is pretty much unheard of these days. He should be a role model for all property managers. I send my deepest sympathies to Dave's family, and hope they can find some comfort knowing the positive impact he had on so many people. Sending peace and strength.

The Lang family

Sunday friends and family will gather to honor and celebrate the life of David — a man whose impact stretched far beyond his family, his friends, and even the countless students he guided over the years. We met nearly forty years ago, when he and his wife, Karen, moved from Toluca Lake to Northridge. Our children were in the same elementary school, and from that moment on our friendship grew. Over the decades, David became not only a close friend but a constant presence of wisdom, humor, and kindness in my life. David was unlike any other person I’ve ever met. He had a rare blend of intelligence, drive, and compassion. As an educator, he served as principal or vice principal at Royal, Malibu, Calabasas, Agoura, and Beverly Hills High School. It’s no exaggeration to say that thousands of young people in Southern California are better off today because of David’s leadership, his dedication to fairness, and his unwavering belief in the potential of every student. His knowledge of the California educational system was so well-respected that he was often called upon to provide expert testimony, shaping policies and decisions that reached far beyond his own schools. While these achievements were remarkable, David’s true pride and joy was his family. He leaves behind his beloved wife of over forty years, Karen; his sons, Stephen and Gregory; and his cherished grandchildren — the light of his life. He often spoke of them with joy and pride, and it was clear to everyone who knew him that family was his greatest accomplishment of all. David’s legacy is not just in the positions he held or the businesses he built, but in the lives he touched. He was a devoted husband, a loving father and grandfather, a trusted colleague, and a loyal friend. He taught us by example — to work hard, to care deeply, and to always look for ways to lift others up. Though we will miss David terribly, we can honor him by carrying forward the qualities he showed us: kindness, dedication, and integrity. His influence will live on in our memories, in our actions, and in the generations he inspired. Rest in peace, my dear friend. Thank you for the decades of friendship, and for leaving the world better than you found it.
