Ed was a wonderful teacher who brought joy and exuberance into all of his classes. I worked at Brentwood Art Center as a model in the late 70's and early 80's and I loved to watch Ed in action. His contribution to the community was immense and he made a lasting impact on all who had the privilege of studying with him. My condolences to Linda and his entire family for losing such a wonderful man.

Eddie is the reason I am an art educator. He was my mentor. Eddie knew how to guide his students in ways that encouraged them to discover their own creativity and helped them see things from new perspectives. I will forever be grateful that he was my first and favorite art teacher. He helped me find my voice with love, respect, and kindness. I got my first traffic ticket driving to BAC, and he held me and reassured me that it wasn't the end of the world. He was like a second father to me. He was so important to me that he signed my wedding Ketuba. Eddie will always be in my heart and mind, and when I teach art, he stands over me, encouraging me to unleash my students' creativity just as he did mine. Sending love to The Buttwinick Family

Oh my, Ed. Ed was largely responsible for how I learned to see. Taking classes consistently from elementary school through trading classes for working on the blue crew, my time at the Brentwood Art Center provided a good bit of my framework for living in this world. From Patti Burris in the tiny back corner room to throwing easels around in the center with Jonathan Bickart, I experienced all mediums, all styles, all subjects they had to offer. Starting life drawing with Ed as a young teenager started me down the path to where I am now with my Vinyl Art. I remember the comfort, the colors and the camaraderie at the BAC that made me feel safe and seen. I loved helping hang annual shows, helping at summer camps and helping with the clay firing. I remember the layout, the sounds of the floorboards and Ed's little office. Fittingly, artisticly, the scale of the building, the scale of the man, remain in my head from a child's perspective, larger than life. Thank you Ed for all your years of support of my creative development, even coming to my early shows and buying pieces of my work to hang in your collection from around the world. Like a second home, the BAC with Ed and Linda will always have a place in my heart. Love you, Daniel E.

Sometime in the waning years of the 20th century, an innocent age where friendships were cultivated more with coffee than with keyboards, I asked Ed Buttwinick for a job. As we used to say back then, 'he didn't know me from Adam.' I had recently moved to LA and was still dizzy from the cultural dislocation. Ed was a mensch, a throwback to a time where eye-contact and a rich, raunchy Jewish joke meant more than a bullet-point on a resumé. He trusted me, despite lack of experience, and he put me in front of a class of privileged, cherubic teenagers. He was never fazed by my untempered, -some would say brutal -teaching style. He was generous, indulgent, open-minded, and beautifully reckless. I will always be grateful to Ed for getting me started on what was to become a 30-year career in arts education. Ed was the real deal. He operated on trust, and instinct, and love. He was funny as hell and he carried himself with the appointed sureness of man, fully confident of the redemptive power of creativity. May his memory be a blessing.
