Obituary for Matthew Berkovitz

It is with deep sadness and devastation that we announce the passing of Matthew Berkovitz, age 36, who tragically lost his life alongside his father, Paul Berkovitz, in an airplane crash on May 3rd, 2025. Matthew was a beloved son, brother, uncle, and friend, whose warmth, laughter, and infectious spirit brightened the lives of all who knew him.

Matthew was the cherished son of Paul Berkovitz and Cheryl Ferreira and step son of Michael Devane, and Veronica Evans his step mother.  He shared an incredible bond with his mother, Cheryl, and step father Michael and their relationship was built on unconditional love, compassion and understanding. Matthew looked to Cheryl and Michael for guidance, and they were always his rock. Their deep connection was central to his life, and his loss leaves an unfillable void in her heart.

Matthew was also a loving brother to Lauren and brother in law Andrew Wells, with whom he became especially close later in life. Over the years, their bond grew stronger, and Lauren became one of his closest friends, a relationship that brought Matthew much joy and comfort. As an “fun-uncle” to Grayson and Bryn Wells, Matthew was so devoted and deeply loved his niece and nephew, and showered them with love and laughter. He cherished every moment spent with them, creating lasting memories.

Matthew was a proud graduate of St. Andrew's High School in Barrington, Rhode Island, and he furthered his education at the University of Rhode Island (URI). During his early years, he spent time pursuing Acting in Hollywood. Later in life he found his professional calling in the construction industry, where he worked with passion and dedication. Over the years, Matthew built strong relationships with clients who eventually became lifelong friends. His work ethic, coupled with his genuine care for others, allowed him to make lasting connections that went beyond the job site.

An adventurer at heart, Matthew loved water—he had been swimming since childhood—and was passionate about aviation, skiing, hiking, travel, and immersing himself in nature. Whether it was a hike, flying somewhere new,  or simply relaxing by the water, Matthew embraced every new experience with open arms. He had a deep appreciation for all things Boston sports especially his deep love for the New England Patriots and Boston Bruins.

Matthew also had an amazing sense of humor and wit, a true love for great food and coffee, often savoring a well-brewed cup of coffee and enjoying a great meal. These simple pleasures were a big part of who he was and how he experienced the world.

Matthew moved back to California just one month before his untimely passing, embarking on a new business venture. He was excited about this fresh chapter in his life, and those close to him knew that he was ready to take on the world with his usual enthusiasm. Tragically, the plane crash cut his journey short, but Matthew’s memory will live on in the hearts of all who knew him.

Matthew’s bond with his father, Paul, was one of deep love and respect. They shared countless moments together, including their love for flying. The tragic loss of both father and son has been a devastating blow to the family, but they find comfort in knowing the strength of their relationship and the many memories they created together.

Matthew was known for his kindness, generosity, and the way he made everyone feel valued. His laughter was contagious, and his spirit left a lasting impression on all who crossed his path. He had a unique ability to bring people together, making them feel welcome and cared for. His memory will live on through the many lives he touched, including his family, friends, and clients turned friends.

Matthew is survived by his mother, Cheryl Ferreira (Michael Devane), his sister Lauren Berkovitz Wells (Andrew Wells), his nieces Grayson and Bryn Wells, step siblings William Devane, Austin and Alexandria Evans, as well as many aunts, uncles, cousins, and a wide circle of friends who loved him dearly. He was preceded in his death by Robert Ferreira, Barbara Ferreira, Eleanore Berkovitz, and Archie Berkovitz.

A memorial service for Matthew, along with his father, Paul, will be held at Mt. Sinai Simi Valley on Thursday, May 22, 2025, at 10:00 AM.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in Matthew’s honor to Chrysalis a non profit organization that changes lives through jobs.

Matt was the kindest person. He would go out of his way to help people he barely knew; that was just who he was... I never met such a kind and caring person. He grew up into a strong and kind man and his future was unlimited. People who knew Matt Berkovitz were blessed by an angel.

Matt, Thank you for all you did for me; and for many other older women on their own: helping us with painting & plumbing; moving, wiring & spackling; building stairs & railings to keep us safe. No job was too large or too small, though you never charged us for all your time & effort spent. You worked tirelessly & with quiet determination to finish the work to your high standards. Always prompt & reliable, delivering your gentle humor with a pause before your warm smile & twinkling eyes, reassuring us you were kidding. Thank you for your kindness & giving spirit; always ready to lend a hand when we needed one. Thank you for being such a beautiful blessing to us all. We love you! Pamela Britt

Matt and I met working at the Hollywood Palladium and hit it off right away. We eventually started also working for a friend that owned a contracting business, where we did various construction projects all over the Los Angeles area. We spent some time together almost every day for the better part of 4 years. From playing hockey at 6am, going to work, getting food, going to watch his beloved Boston Bruins, or my beloved New Jersey Devils, concerts, road trips... so many memories that I will hold close to me as long as I live. Matt was a true friend, and like a brother I never had for a significant period of my life. He was one of a kind. Selfless, caring, witty, funny, smart thoughtful, determined, and genuine. What more could you ask for in a friend? The best memory I have with Matt turns out to be a bittersweet one. When I moved back to the east coast from California- in true Matt fashion, he jumped at the chance for an adventure, and took the road trip back with me. We stopped in Vegas, the grand canyon, Vail Colorado, I even made a slight detour through Chicago, so we could check out some filming locations from one of his favorite movies, Home Alone. We finished off our trip with a stop in Philadelphia. Took a quick ride around the city checking out more film locations, and of course got cheese steaks before taking him back to the airport. Overall, this trip with Matt is one of the hilights of my life. Because of Matt, his one of a kind personality, and ability to find the humor in almost any sotuation. I only say this was bitteraweet, because little did I know, it would be the last time I would see his smiling face. I'm sorry we lost touch over the past few years. I will miss you terribly. My heart goes out to your family, friends, and everyone that I know you have left a lasting impression on. Rest easy my friend.

I met Matt when I was 10 years old, and he quickly became a brother to me. Everyone in Matts family from his grandparents, parents, sister, aunts, uncles, and cousins always made me feel welcome, and like part of the family, filled with care and generosity. Those amazing qualities really stood out in who Matt was as a person. Always selfless, always going out of his way to help not expecting anything in return. He was a masterclass on what a heart of gold looked like. He was so charismatic, and expressive the wisecracks were always good for a chuckle. Truly lived to seize the day and went after what he wanted in life. We shared a lot of the same passions and countless memories bonding over Boston sports, catch football on a Pats halftime break, movies (especially our love for Home Alone) trips up at the Bunk House, building forts, and igloos. Vacations and holidays together, growing up from kids into men together. So much laughter into tears moments, trips to Target to build our DVD collections, he was going for every Will Ferrell movie at the time. And poor Cheryl when we fell in love with quoting Wedding Crashers, having to hear "Ma the meatloaf" yelled across the house constantly lol. I really wish I could tell him Rule #1 Never Leave a fellow crasher behind one more time. Attempting to put how amazing of a person Matt was into words, is like trying to take a picture of the moon. But he will forever be missed and always loved as a brother.

Matt was a tremendous brother in law. I met Matt not long after I began dating his sister Lauren. We became fast friends. Matt was such a smart, witty, and caring person. Summers and holidays in Rhode Island will always provide tons of special memories - like the time he and I tried “magnet fishing” from the dock in Bristol. 😂 we found nothing but had a good time together trying. Matt absolutely loved Grayson and Bryn, his niece and nephew. He was so excited to start his new chapter again in California with my wife and the kids and I. He will forever live on as “Uncle Matt” for my kids. We will miss him immensely beyond available words. Until we meet again. May your memory be a blessing.
