Souvenirs

Arnold Bookbinder, born in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada, on February 7, 1933, passed away peacefully on October 2, 2024 where he lived at Oakmont of Agoura Hills. He was the son of Louis & Sarah Bookbinder, who settled in Winnipeg after leaving Russia.  In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his dear brother, Dr. Harold Bookbinder & wife, Laura (Sasadeusz) Bookbinder and fun-loving sister Frances (Bookbinder) Settler & husband Moishe Settler. Arnold moved his family to Canoga Park, California, in 1960, where he built a life dedicated to his family, community, and especially his profession. He was the beloved husband of Shirley Sally (Barish) Bookbinder, who had been married for 70 years; and the beloved father of Debra (Bookbinder) and David Solomon, and Louis (deceased) and Susan (Glugover) Bookbinder. He was a proud grandfather to Rachel (Solomon) & Alex Lin, Matthew Solomon and Sarah Bookbinder, and many nephews and nieces.  Arnold served his country honorably as an officer of the Canadian Army in Europe in the 1950's.Professionally, he was a highly respected structural engineer, contributing significantly to earthquake safety initiatives, leaving a lasting impact on the field. In addition, he was an expert witness for numerous years fighting for ethical and moral standards in structural engineering integrity. His passion for engineering was boundless, and he was always eager to share his knowledge, often engaging in long, insightful conversations on the subject.Arnold was a founding member of Temple Aliyah in Woodland Hills, where he was a valued participant of the Synagogue and served many years on the Board.  He had a lifelong love for sports, particularly basketball, and was a devoted fan of the Los Angeles Lakers. His love for both playing and watching sports brought joy to his life and those around him.

Arnold’s legacy will live on through the many lives he touched, his contributions to his field, and the loving family he leaves behind. He will be deeply missed.
