Dr. Gary Marc Lazarus, O.D., Ph.D, F.A.A.O., passed away after a long illness on November 23, 2025.  Gary received his bachelor’s degree in psychology from UCLA, and while an undergraduate, he did graduate study in neuro-physiology and neuro-psychology at UCLA’s Brain Research Institute at the UCLA School of Medicine. While attending optometry school, he completed both a bachelor’s of science in visual physiology and the O.D., the doctor of optometry.  Continuing his education, Gary earned a master’s degree in neurophysiology of vision and a Ph.D in neuro ophthalmic science. Gary interned at the ENT Department of the Long Beach Naval Hospital in Long Beach as well as doing rounds at the Jules Stein Eye Institute and the Hollywood Presbyterian Hospital. Gary was a member of many national and international eye research opportunities and was a senior member of the attending optometry staff of Cedars Sinai for many years. Gary was on the leading edge of contact lenses research and development and refractive surgery. He participated in writing articles and giving scientific presentations. Gary’s optometry office was in Manhattan Beach, California, and he was a long-time resident of Sherman Oaks, California.  Gary is survived by his beloved wife of 55 years, Diane, and his brother-in-law, Richard Seigle. The funeral was held at Mt. Sinai Memorial Park Hollywood Hills on November 26, 2025. Donations can be made to The Samoyed Club of America as he and his wife loved this breed and raised several.  https://www.samoyedclubofamerica.org/

I worked with Gary at my optometry office in Sylmar from 1995 to 2008. He worked there part time 2 days a week. We had many conversations ranging from politics to religion and everything in between. Gary was very conscientious and professional, and cared deeply about his profession and the patients. Gary loved his dogs, his Mercedes and of course his wife. Condolences to Diane.
