Recuerdos

Be true to yourself, help others, make each day your masterpiece, make friendships a fine art, drink deeply from good books, give thanks for your blessings and pray for guidance every day.

Irwin (Irv) D. Goldring, of Sherman Oaks, died at home on September 17, 2024 at the age of 93. Irv was a beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle, friend, and Bruin.

Born at Cedar Sinai Hospital, Irv spent his entire life in his beloved California, except for 2 years serving in the Air Force in Alaska.   Having found the Boy Scouts as a young boy, Irv developed a life long passion for the outdoors, which led to his hobbies of backpacking, skiing, scuba diving, and bicycling.  He shared these passions with his wife Clarann, his children, grandchildren, nephews, nieces, and friends.  When planning a backpacking trip up in the High Sierra, family and friends knew to go to Irv for maps, gear, planning advice, and enthusiastic support!  Clarann and Irv continued with a spirit of adventure throughout their lives, going on river trips, kayaking in Alaska, hiking in Patagonia, traveling to Antarctica, and many other places around the globe with family and friends.

Irv attended Fairfax High School and then attended UCLA for both his undergraduate studies as well as Law School.  At UCLA he was active in the student council (government), the University Religious Conference, and was a counselor, and head maintenance man at UniCamp.

Once Irv started something, he maintained allegiance to it for the rest of his life.  Whether it was the Boy Scouts, to UniCamp, his dedication to his family and friends, or to the Adat Ari El synagogue where he was a long time leader and president of the synagogue, he was in service throughout his life.  And, of course, one of his biggest life time commitments was to UCLA sports, being a season ticket holder for football and basketball until just a couple of years before his passing.

An avid learner, Irv read voraciously, traveled to every continent, traveled to almost every state in the United States, and wished he could stop at every historical marker along the way.  (Clarann, however, was not up for stopping at every historical marker and was heard on many occasion to say, “In your next life, with your next wife!”)  Irv participated actively in the California Bar Association Trust and Probate section.  Irv could give an informal lecture on many topics at the drop of a hat.

Funny, dedicated, loving, active, committed to family and community, trustworthy, and righteous; Irv’s engagement with life could always be seen in the sparkle of his beautiful blue eyes.

Preceded in death by his wife, Clarann, and his daughter, Kathy,  Irv is survived by his 3 children (Dinnie, Lee, and Jill), sister Pat, 10 grandchildren, niece, and nephews.

The hospitality of Irv and Clarann was renown, and I was one such long-term guest. For close to a year I lived with them while I got used to civilian life again. I went on walks with Clarann and drove back from work with Irv. I would walk from my job in Century City to his office in Beverly Hills. He preferred the green GT (I think that was the make -- a big "cool" looking car) and would spend most of the drive home explaining the intricacies of baseball. I never got the nuances but I loved him for trying. He would often tell stories of his years as camp counselor, telling of his adventures and those of my dad's -- the place their friendship began. It was like being with my dad (both were bald) but with twinkling blue eyes and a penchant for bike riding (NOT my dad!). Living with the family (Lee and Jill still lived at home), I answered the phones when it rang. And since I wanted to avoid confusion -- I would answer "Goldring Residence, Lisa speaking." That is when Irv bestowed on me the moniker of "French Maid." Thereafter, that is how I would identify myself when I reached out to them. In my minds eye I see Irv kitted out in the the bike-riding spandex, or sitting in his back office, as I walked to my room in the pool house. There are more stories and memories, but above all, it is the smile and the blue twinkling eyes. And the kindness. To Dinnie, Lee and Jill, and their families, "May you be comforted among the mourners of Zion and Jerusalem."

I first met Irv Goldring in 1954, as a new Scoutmaster attending Scoutmasters Training conducted by Irv at Camp Slauson. He did a pretty good job, as I have been a Scoutmaster ever since! We subsequently served together on the Executive Board of the Western Los Angeles County Council for some forty years. Irv was a generous financial supporter of Scouting and a sage contributor in the decision making of the Board. In addition, Irv and I practiced law in the same area, estate planning and Probate. Irv, the ultimate expert, was always there for me with advice and counsel, and usually a story or anecdote included. I will miss Irv Goldring, a distinguished lawyer, dedicated Scouter, and friend.

When I was a host on the “Scoutcast L.A.” podcast for the Boy Scouts of America Western Los Angeles County Council I had a unique opportunity presented to me in 2018 of meeting Irv at Camp Josepho in the Pacific Palisades and interviewing him about his memories of the Camp, memories going back to the 1940’s when the camp was a new property in the Crescent Bay Council. Little did I know at the time how life changing spending one afternoon with Irv would be. Getting to hear about the history of the Camp from someone who essentially grew up there was a treat, but what I did not expect was that the love that Irv had for the BSA would come through his stories in such a tangible way that it would change my perspective about a program that I had participated in in my youth and that both my children were participating in; I came away from that afternoon with a whole different perspective about what Scouting means and the transformative nature that it can have on the youth that participate in the program. Irv began the interview by talking about the early days of the camp, he and his friends racing their jalopies down the fire road to the camp (for those who have been there recently, you can only imagine how treacherous those roads were in the mid 1940’s!) and what camp was like when it was full of boys in the summer. But what really hit home was when he found the plaque on the wall at Josepho with his name on it commemorating his Vigil Honor. Irv said that getting to Eagle Scout is fine, but becoming an “Arrowman” was the real achievement, they were the “Kings of the Camp”. Remembering Irv’s eyes watering as he found that little plaque high up on the wall in the old lodge moves me to this day. Irv spoke at length about how his experiences in the BSA made him into the man he became, living a life of adventure, travel, pursuing knowledge and service. Seeing the BSA program through his eyes changed me, and to this day when I see scouts enjoying Camp Josepho I see a little bit of Irv’s twinkle in their eyes. I came away from my time with Irv with so much more than just an interview about the early years of one of our BSA properties, I came away with tangible evidence of the impact and the good that comes by preparing for life via the BSA program. Unfortunately, my interview with Irv was lost before we could air it, and when I found out that we no longer had Irv’s words recorded I was so disappointed… but the silver lining is that I had an afternoon that I will never forget, and that I get to share Irv’s story in person frequently when I talk about our program and how it sets up youth for success. I will never forget that afternoon with Irv, and I hope to go on telling his story to anyone who will listen. May his memory be a blessing for others as it is for me.
