Lois Lieberman, Trailblazing Artist, Adventurer & Marathon Runner, Dies at 104

Lois Natalie Lieberman, a beloved mother, grandmother, trailblazer, and longtime Simi Valley resident, passed away peacefully on April 2, 2025, surrounded by her family. She had just celebrated her 104th birthday.

Born on March 29, 1921, in Boston, Massachusetts, Lois was a woman ahead of her time. In 1969, she became the first female cartographer for the Los Angeles Planning Department. Always a lifelong learner, she earned her associate degree from Moorpark College as an adult.

Lois and her husband, Saul, moved to Simi Valley in 1961, where they raised their family and actively participated in the local arts community. Together, they were members of the Simi Valley Art Association for many years.

After Saul’s passing in 1982, Lois entered a bold new chapter. At the age of 60, she took a mountaineering class and began living life with a renewed sense of adventure and purpose. She became an avid marathon runner, completing three Los Angeles Marathons in her late 60s and early 70s, and often ran the Sycamore Canyon trail, as well as hiked nearly every major trail in Ventura and Los Angeles Counties.

Her passion for movement extended to Jazzercise, cardio-jam, kickboxing, krav maga, and weight training. She even taught Tai Chi at the Simi Valley Senior Center for many years. Her personal mantras? “Don’t die before you’re dead” and “Just keep moving.”

Lois was also a gifted visual artist, known for her skill in sculpting, throwing clay, oil painting, and watercolors. Whether working in the garden, painting, or skiing down a slope, she found joy in physical expression and creativity.

Even after retirement, she kept busy with a part-time job in the shoe department at Mervyn’s, where she thrived on connecting with people.

Lois lived by the mottos “You work through it” and “We give ourselves a hug and we get on with it.” She inspired everyone around her with her fierce independence, irrepressible humor, and zest for life.

She is survived by her children Elayne Lieberman (Steve Schenck), Peter Lieberman (Cynthia), and Eric Lieberman (Ann); and her cherished grandchildren Elizabeth, Jacob, and Danielle Lieberman.

Lois Lieberman will be remembered forever for her courage, creativity, and unstoppable spirit.

What lesson(s) did Lois teach you?

Lois was a force of nature. We were neighbors for about 14 years. To be honest, we shared mostly just polite hellos and cookies at Hanukah for the first 10 years. But when my husband passed 4 years ago Lois and her family brought beautiful flowers to me. A week or so later I went across the street to thank her. She invited me in and just opened up her heart with beautiful words of strength and love. She encouraged me to find my way in my new life and shared her experience in doing just that; she told me about her adventures and how she took up scuba diving when in her 60s. What she didn’t know was that I had been an avid scuba diver in my younger years. So there we were, at 76 and 100 years old, sharing war stories about our mutual fascination with the ocean. How rare to find another woman to share that with. Her wise words to me showed me that there is life after loss, and I should allow myself to have new adventures. And I am doing just that. I thank Lois for showing me the way; for showing me that memories are just that. Life is what lies ahead of us. From what I saw, she cherished her memories and lived her life with enthusiasm. I will remember and be grateful to dear Lois forever. Anida Margolis

Lois was one of the happiest people I have ever known. My memories of her are ones of a life lived joyously, her happy face accompanied by her beaming smile. As the Duke would say, "we loved her madly".

I remember spending so much time hiking and going out to eat. She was a complete mentor who encouraged me to move more and complain less. She was a force of nature and I will always be indebted to her for all she gave me.

Bob and Lisa Schenck and Family

The Schenck Family sends condolences to the Liebermans and all who knew and loved Lois. What a remarkable life to celebrate! After admiring her from afar via Elayne's accounts and news over the decades, we were fortunate to finally spend time with Lois in person a couple of years ago at a family gathering at Elayne and Steve's place in Simi. We all loved & enjoyed the time spent together and marveled at her humor and vibrant presence. We look forward to sharing in the celebration via the live feed on the 27th.

I am so grateful that the memorial for Lois is going to be live-streamed as I am unable to attend in person. I am so glad I was able to see Lois on Thanksgiving weekend this year. I was as happy to see her as she was to see me. She and my mom, Mildred, had such a wonderful sweet relationship- maybe she can now talk mom into going for a hike! All my love to the family- you/we were all so blessed to have Lois with us for such a long time. Big shoes to fill to be present, loving and kind. I love all of you very much. Arla
