How did you meet Franklin?

Frank and his wife Grace and I moved to Tucson in June, 1993, but did not meet until November at an ACLU meeting where we discovered that both of us loved backgammon. So, for nearly 25 years, I would drive out to Frank's home near Sabino Canyon every Friday and play backgammon nonstop until it was time to drive him to his Synagogue mit Ranch house (across the street from the Hebrew Academy where he had previously taught) and spend the night in the bunk house before services the next morning. We were to last play three years ago when I flew up to Chico on an errand of mercy after Grace had injured herself in a horseback riding accident, but before heading back to the Sacramento Airport on the 4th day of my visit, our last moments together were spent playing three final matches of backgammon and taking Frank's & Grace's dog, a true "Joy", for a leisurely walk near a homeless camp under the 99 Freeway. So, Frank, here's to the homeless & backgammon in the sky.

How did you meet Franklin?

I met Frank for the first time when we both showed up to attend an extension class at UCLA. It was an art history class and it continued for 3 semesters. About 20 people attended, and the instructor informed us that her staff had been unable to hook up the 2 or 3 slide projectors so she could compare and contrast the images she wanted to discuss. She said we would have to leave and we would make the class up later. There were many groans, so she asked if there was anyone in the class who could do it for us. Frank jumped up and completed the task in short order. We were all grateful and we all had a pleasant introduction to Frank. During the break, many of us thanked Frank personally as we shared a snack from the vending machines and he commented on the fact that I had bought a package of M&M's. The next class, Frank brought me some M&M's and we became friends sharing our love of art.
