Joan I Zwein
June 16th, 1932 - October 20th, 2022
June 16th, 1932 - October 20th, 2022
Joan Zwein passed away on October 20, 2022 at the age of 90 due to complications with dementia. She was surrounded by loved ones in her Calabasas, California home. Joan was born in Brooklyn, New York in 1932 to David and Jean Goldstein. At the age of 15, Joan moved to California with her mother, and sister Sandra. Her father joined soon after. Joan became a registered nurse (RN) and worked in the nursing field for 52 years, initially assisting in major surgeries and later acquiring her teaching credential to become a nursing instructor. She trained future generations of nurses for many years.
Joan’s passion for helping people and passing on the legacy of nursing proved extremely rewarding for her. In her later years, after some hospital stays, Joan shared stories of having received nursing care from former students. These nurses felt honored to care for their beloved teacher. In addition to nursing, Joan had many interests over the years, including raising and showing award-winning guppies. She supplied some of her fish to local stores. Joan, along with her husband Ben, loved to travel. They were among the first Americans to visit China after the country opened its borders to tourists. Joan and Ben also traveled to Russia, Australia, and New Zealand, among other countries. Joan also had a particular fondness for Alaska, the Caribbean, and New Orleans.
Joan loved her family, gardening, reading, cooking, and hosting dinners for extended family and friends. She is survived by her husband of 64 years, Benjamin Zwein, daughters Lora and Diana, son Darren, son-in-law Michael, and grandson Jacob. Joan will be greatly missed.
