Steven M. Lerner
11 de septiembre de 1959 - 13 de agosto de 2025
11 de septiembre de 1959 - 13 de agosto de 2025
Steven Lerner was born in Los Angeles on September 11, 1959, and died suddenly and unexpectedly of a heart attack in his Porter Ranch home in early August of 2025. He grew up in Encino, California, and attended the University of California at Santa Barbara and Cal State University Northridge, where he received a bachelor’s degree in music composition, focusing on jazz. Later in his life he turned from composing music to writing fiction that was distinguished by wryly humorous, sympathetic, somewhat eccentric characters and his sense of the absurd. His completed books were Moose Tales & Sleepy Little Town (2006) and The Book of Jake (2019). His family is looking forward to reading the unpublished writings discovered on his laptop. Steve was predeceased by his parents Harvey Robert Lerner, M.D., and Marilyn Weinlos Lerner. He is survived by his sisters Moira Nelson (Dency), Ava Lerner Wooton, and Beth Wilcox (Dan); nieces Jesse Lerner, Dori Nichols, Hannah Wilcox, Emily Wilcox, and Charlie Nelson Keever; and nephew David Wilcox. He was sweet, intelligent, sensitive, and hilarious, and we miss him.

A favourite photo of Steve at Marilyn's.

Thursday was Steve’s birthday, and I could send him love without phone, card or email. He was so happy these last few years to have more time to focus on writing, a process that gave him a lot of pleasure. His writing gave us an additional window into everything he was. I smile when I think of him.

Here are the Kansas nieces and nephew, observing and listening.

Neil and I will always remember our sweet, talented, funny and tender cousin Steve with love. We have many memories and photos of our times together with Marilyn in Encino and of Steve's visit with us in Montreal. Neil and Steve shared a love of jazz, traded cd's and talked music whenever we were together. We also all loved Elmore Leonard and Chester Himes and Steve provided a list of many others! I remember when he played his own compositions on Marilyn's piano..so meditative and sensitively felt. The Book of Jake sits on our shelf..a part of him is with us.

Strong memories of Baba’s kitchen door clicking open and Uncle Steve stepping in with his classic smile. He’d be led immediately to the breakfast spread where he’d listen to the breakdown of options, even though they never changed. It’s this quiet little moment of comedy and heart that i’m getting a lot of remembering him. I’ll miss him and I hope to hear more stories because I forgot all about the penguin joke.

I have fond memories of my cousin Steve at holiday gatherings of the Lerner-Brackelmanns family especially at the Lerner home with Steve playing the paino. We also had great times in our younger days playing competitive tennis. He was so creative and a gentle, sensitive soul. His Uncle Walter, Aunt Lois and my brother Jonathan and I cared deeply for Steve. Rest in peace my dear cousin.
