In Loving Memory of Harry Stephen \"Doc Math\" Grand We are deeply saddened to announce the passing of Harry Stephen Grand, affectionately known as \"Doc Math\", who left us peacefully at the age of 81, on January 12, 2024 in Westlake Village, CA. Harry\'s life was a beautiful tapestry woven with love, laughter, and learning. He shared 58 blissful years of marriage with his loving wife, Gail. Their life together was an adventure, filled with travel, shared passions, and unwavering companionship. Together, they explored the globe, creating a lifetime of memories. He is lovingly remembered by his family: his son Paul Grand, his daughter Alissa Nial, his devoted daughter-in-law Tracy Grand, and his beloved son-in-law Tom Nial. His legacy is also cherished by his five granddaughters - Alex, Sammy, Charlie, Jessie, and Brittney - who will always hold dear their granddad\'s wisdom and humor. His furry four- legged children, Bella and Rosie, additionally adored him. Harry\'s remarkable life journey began in New York in 1942, the only child of Robert and Adele Grand. Without siblings of his own, Harry forged very close lasting ties with his cousins and numerous friends. He initially embarked on a career as a chemical engineer, a testament to his brilliant mind and passion for science. However, craving a profession that allowed more personal interaction and the joy of brightening someone\'s day, he made the bold decision to switch careers, with the full support of his young family. Harry became a dentist, a role in which he excelled not only in skill but in his unique ability to make his patients laugh and feel at ease in his dental chair. He moved his family to Florida where his dental practice thrived and he created endless smiles. In the year 2003, glaucoma ended his career as a dentist.  He and Gail then moved to California to be closer to their children and grandchildren. Exhibiting incredible resilience,  Harry found a new passion in teaching and service. He transitioned to teaching math at the middle/high school level and started a free math tutoring program at the Thousand Oaks Teen Center.  This is where he affectionately earned the nickname \"Doc Math.\" He was a beacon of wisdom and joy for his students, simplifying complex mathematical concepts with ease and humor. Harry paved the way for many young people to share his love for math and to make their college acceptances that much easier.  Harry continued contributing to society, bringing laughter and a love for learning to people of all ages. He volunteered at Los Robles Rehabilitation Hospital for many years, telling jokes and performing magic tricks for patients and their family members. A fan of travel and gambling, Harry often embarked on cruises and vacations with friends and family, infusing these trips with laughter and unforgettable moments. Harry’s zest for life was his calling card, and his many friends and family members have seemingly endless stories about laughing and spending time with Harry. A funeral service in memory of Harry\'s life will take place at Mt Sinai Funeral Home in Simi Valley. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations to Smile Train or Best Friends Animal Rescue. Harry \"Doc Math\" Grand\'s spirit, marked by joy, kindness, and a perpetual readiness to bring a smile to others\' faces, will be deeply missed but eternally cherished. Rest in peace, our beloved Harry.

Thank you Harry for tutoring my daughter Lilly over several years at the Teen Center. Your silliness I’m sure kept her coming back. Your encouragement and help was like a caring grandfather that she didn’t have so I really appreciate it. Lilly also was sad to hear of your passing and she already knew so much about you as I read her the obit. Her confidence in math even during Covid got her through high school and into three of the colleges she applied to. You show what a difference one man can make. Rest in peace and peace to your family and loved ones.
