Evelyn Goren Sherman

October 2, 1927 – June 21, 2026

Evelyn Goren Sherman, beloved mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, aunt, and friend, passed away peacefully at her home at Seacrest Village in Encinitas on June 21, 2026 at the age of 98. Born at home in the Bronx on October 2, 1927 to Julius and Nettie Goren, Eastern European immigrants, family was at the core of Evelyn’s life, and the values of love, resilience, and generosity remained with her throughout her life. The Gorens moved to California where Evelyn enrolled at UCLA and, following in her parents' footsteps, began a lifelong commitment to tikkun olam.  She met Morry Sherman z"l, at UCLA ,married at age 20, and embraced her most treasured roles—that of wife, daughter, mother, and volunteer. Beginning as president of B'nai B'rith Hillel at UCLA, Evelyn devoted countless hours to organizations that strengthened both the Jewish and broader communities. She took on leadership roles at UCLA B'nai Brith Hillel, Mt. Sinai Hospital, PTA, Jewish Federation, Hope for Hearing, Congregation Mogen David, Hadassah, and NCJW. She believed deeply in making a difference through acts of caring and service.

Being a “Jewish mother” brought Evelyn great joy. She was an avid reader, mahjong player, and world traveler. Most of all, she enjoyed celebrating Shabbat and Jewish holidays with family. Nothing made her happier than cheering on her great-grandchildren at their sports events and theater performances, or celebrating Shabbat or Grandparents Day at Congregation Beth Am.  Her love was expressed through action, whether knitting hats for local hospital patients, organizing holiday celebrations, or simply being present for the milestones and everyday moments that mattered most. At age 90, she followed her grandchildren and great grandchildren to San Diego and embarked on a new life at Seacrest Village where she enjoyed exercise class, book club, theatre, and crafts. She lived independently until 6 weeks before her passing when family members and a caregiver provided assistance.

Evelyn is survived by her three daughters, Alyse Sherman Kirschen (David), Marcia Fellner, and Susan Sherman Warfield (Patrick); seven grandchildren--Matthew Kirschen (Alison Joseph), Shayna Kirschen Potash (Marc), Todd Kirschen (Jaclyn), Jason Fellner, Ryan Fellner (Sarah), Naomi Neutel (Jared), and Sheryl Warfield; and fourteen great-grandchildren--Ethan, Bella, and Haley Potash, Mischa, Jacob, and Lucas Fellner, Caleb, Eliana, and Orli Kirschen, Olivia and Ezra Kirschen, Maddie and Aiden Fellner, and Makena Neutel. She is also survived by two sisters, Gloria Weinstein and Mildred Mandel, many beloved nieces and nephews, and countless friends whose lives she touched. She was predeceased by her husband, Morry, and older siblings, Ozzie, Pearl, and Harry.

Evelyn lived a long and meaningful life, marked by deep love for her family and a quiet strength. Her legacy lives on in the family she cherished, the communities she served, and the countless lives who were enriched by her presence. May her memory be for a blessing.
