Stephanie Meffley Hayutin
1 février 1943 - 21 décembre 2024
1 février 1943 - 21 décembre 2024
After years of brave struggle with progressive lung disease and declining health, Stephanie Meffley Hayutin passed away swiftly from an unexpected cardiac event on December 21, 2024. Stephanie is survived by her son Matthew Hayutin (Lizette), her daughter Amy Hayutin Contreras (Jesse), her grandchildren, Elena Sofia, Bianca Isabela, Chloe Irene, and Luca William, and her brother Jacob Meffley. Stephanie was born on February 1, 1943 in Denver Colorado to William and Shirley Meffley. A devoted daughter, sister, wife, mother, aunt, grandmother, and friend, Stephanie was a consummate matriarch and loving caregiver to all in need. Stephanie married her high school sweetheart in 1965, first working as nurse at Massachusetts General to support her husband as he completed law school in Boston. Moving to Los Angeles in 1968 for Marc to begin his legal career, Stephanie paused her own career to focus on raising her two children. After serving as highly active PTA president and launching her own floral business, Country Gardens, Stephanie returned to school. She earned her masters and then all but her dissertation in Clinical Psychology. Stephanie taught “Mommy and Me” classes for nearly two decades at St. John’s Health Center and simultaneously built a thriving child and family therapy private practice for decades more before finally retiring. A founding member and past president of the Santa Monica Synagogue and a beloved member of the Play Group and multiple book clubs, Stephanie was a voracious reader, passionate Opera goer, and brave world traveler, even with portable oxygen in tow for the past 20 years. Stephanie’s greatest driving force was her compassion and limitless caring and love for her family members and dear friends. She was an active caregiver to all of her grandchildren and a sophisticated medical professional, leading the way as an advisor and supportive companion to many friends and family struggling with myriad health issues for her entire adult life. Stephanie was vivacious and hilarious. A magnetic personality, her love and laughter filled our hearts. She will be missed by so many and her memory lives on in each of us.

I loved Stephanie so much! She was like a second mom to me when I was little and features prominently in my earliest memories from when we first moved to California. According to my mom, I even once asked if Stevie (as she was known back then) could be my mom instead. I think I may have learned all my best swear words from her! It is hard to imagine a world without her deep, big hearted laugh. I am looking forward to seeing all of you and sharing the many colorful memories we have of Stephanie as we celebrate her life. Some of those swear words should come in handy! Much love and solace to Amy and Matt.

Quel est le moment le plus drôle que vous avez vécu ensemble?
All of them! It seems as though deep down, we both realized that laughing with life and laughing at it is the only rational way to deal with it. She was truly wize!

When I think of Stephanie, or Steph mom as I often called her, I think of someone who was incredibly loving, supportive, generous, unapologetic, and so funny. From the moment I married Matthew, Marc and Stephanie welcomed me into their family as if I was always a part of them and they celebrated all of me, including my own family and Colombian culture. Stephanie was an incredible mother-in-law and grandmother to our children. She always knew what to say or do and she listened without judgement. She loved and played hard and was filled with so many anecdotes and funny stories. Even after so many years, I still felt like I was learning something knew about her past. I admired her knowledge about so many different things - she always seemed to have an answer or recommendation. She was just plain fun, preferring gummy bears and red vines to anything healthy! Being around Stephanie was to be around light and laughter and I will greatly miss her.

Amy, Matt & Family... I am sincerely at a loss. Your mom was so very dear to me for all my many years of working for your dad and even after. She was the best, you're forever blessed to have had the best parents ever. . I know she's at her best again taking care of your dad... you're all forever in my heart. XOXO

Comment avez-vous rencontré Stephanie?
She was my Cousin for over 78 years. I grew up in her loving presence and often her care. I can’t imagine a life that did not include “Stevie” as a critical part of my formative life. Growing up, my cousin Jake and I were lovingly known to her as “you two little sh.ts”. I’m sure we were and I will always love her as one of her two favorite “little sh.ts”. ‘
